This station lies on the Merseyrail network close to the branch lines with the New Kirby and West Brighton branches. The station serves the northern area of the large Merseyside town of Birkenhead on the Wirral just across the River Mersey from Liverpool. The station was originally known as Birkenhead Docks because of its proximity to the sea, however these docks are now largely unused.
