This station is located at the centre of Birkenhead, a town that stands across the Mersey from Liverpool on the Wirral on Merseyside. The station was once the headquarters of the Mersey Railways and has a famous painted sign claiming that by train is ‘the fastest way to Liverpool’ above the entrance to the station. The area is associated with all things maritime and has always had a long connection with the sea and it’s nearby neighbour and port Liverpool.
