Atherton Station is in a part of Greater Manchester and close to Wigan. It grew up as a place predominantly driven by the heavy industry of bygone centuries, making its name in wool making, mining and milling. The area became relatively affluent throughout this period and therefore enjoys several marvellous nineteenth century churches. Today the town relies on far lighter industry and commerce for its economy and is effectively a satellite of Manchester as the conurbation has grown.
