German bombing during the Second World War devastated the historic suburb of Wapping. Located on the banks of the River Thames in East London, the area has a long and illustrious maritime connection, dating back nearly a thousand years. Largely deprived for much of the twentieth century the area was regenerated in the 1980s by News International moving their printing works from Fleet Street to Wapping. The Prospect of Whitby pub in the suburb claims to be the oldest riverside pub in London.
