High Barnet is the northern terminus of the Northern Line. A leafy suburb of north London the town was the site of the Battle of Barnet in 1471. Barnet is the highest point on the Old Great North Road between London and Edinburgh. The tower of St. John the Baptist Church claims to be the highest point in Europe west of the Ural Mountains in Russia. The town was formerly home to a well known fair, hence the cockney rhyming slang ‘Barnet’ for hair.
