The station takes it name from the nearby East India Dock. The dock was used primarily by the London Docks as a trading post for boats that were shipping goods to and from the Indian subcontinent. It is no longer in use for this purpose, but a great deal of maritime history remains in the area. The station was originally to be named ‘Brunswick’ but it was changed, as this name is a code word used by drivers to indicate that a train has left the station.
