The station became part of the London Underground network after the electrification of the Upminster branch of the District Line, and was opened in 1932. It is in Travelcard zone 5 and situated on the border between Greater London and metropolitan Essex. Originally known as Gale Street Halt, the station serves part of Romford, a bustling Essex town with a great deal of shopping and dining available. The station only has 2 platforms and therefore can be particularly busy at peak times.
