This station serves Barking, a suburb of Greater London that straddles the border with metropolitan Essex. Close to the station there are several impressive shopping streets and a good deal of pubs, bars and restaurants. This area has an ethnic feel and has for decades been a melting pot of multi cultural peoples. Much of Barking is residential and the station is also served by London Underground services.
