This railway station is one of three that serve the central areas of the large Essex town of Southend on Sea and is one of the more major of these. The facility is the terminus of the main line that runs from London Liverpool Street Station to Southend; a branch of the Great Eastern Mainline Railway. It is popular with commuter traffic because of its fast trains to the capital.
